The Mission, Vision & Goals of the Global NetworkThe vision of the Global Network is a world free of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), allowing people to be healthy, develop fully, learn effectively, raise families, and be productive members of their communities. The mission of the Global Network is to help those who suffer from and are at risk of the NTDs by:
- Promoting effective collaboration
- Ensuring that everyone who suffers from NTDs has access to effective treatment and cure
- Developing and deploying a new generation of improved preventative and therapeutic tools and strategies to eliminate NTD
| | The Goal of the Global NetworkThe goal of the Global Network is to reduce the global disease burden of NTDs by 2015 in order to control and eliminate these diseases as public health problems and improve childhood development, school attendance and performance, pregnancy outcomes, and worker productivity among the world's poorest populations, helping to realize the Millennium Development Goals of sustainable poverty reduction.
| Our StrategyIn order to achieve our goal, the Global Network will implement an aggressive advocacy and resource mobilization strategy aimed at:
- Increasing the number of people who have access to life-saving essential medicines(albendazole or mebendazole, praziquantel, ivermectin or DEC, and azithromycin) through new or expanded national NTD control programs.
- Advocating for the inclusion of NTDs on the agenda of international health and development forums. There will be a growing understanding of the links between NTDs and higher profile diseases and health, education, and poverty in general.
- Building the capacity of civil society and affected communities in donor and endemic countries to advocate universal access to treatment and mobilize collective action in the fight against NTDs.
| Our Targets The Global Network has the following specific targets:
- By 2015, the Global Network will have helped to mobilize a significant portion of the estimated US $1.2 - 2 billion required to combat NTDs throughout Africa, and $2.8 - 4 billion to combat NTDs globally over a five year period.
- By 2015, the Global Network will have increased awareness and support for NTD control and promoted key partnerships among national governments, multi-lateral and bi-lateral agencies, civil society organizations, foundations, media, and the private sector creating the political accountability and social pressure required to shape policy agendas and mobilize additional resources.
- By 2020, the NTDs will be eliminated as a global health problem.
